My name is Naoko, and I work in the human resources / public relations team at a health tech startup “Medmain”. I am happy to announce that we’ve launched an official company blog!
As this is our first post, I’d like to start off with introducing about Medmain".
“pathological diagnosis”?
I would like to talk about “pathology” in the first place.What exactly is pathology?
Many of you might have had experiences such as going in for a checkup for suspected cancer,and worried so much until you get the result.
It must have been felt so long, and that might have made you feel even more anxious.
Some of you may have experienced it yourself, or it might have happened to those who you love.
A pathologist is a medical healthcare provider who examines bodies and body tissues. He or she is also responsible for performing lab tests.
They diagnose the specimens by observing the cells and tissues with their eyes under a microscope. They usually work in hospitals, testing centers, and the diagnosis they make is called a “pathological diagnosis”.
For example, when a gastric endoscopy reveals a lesion, It must be determined if it is a gastric cancer or other stomach conditions. In that case, a “biopsy” is performed to examine a small amount of tissue from the wall of the stomach.
It is one of the tasks that are performed by pathologist.
In addition, they examine the details, the quality, location and extent of the lesions in the organs that were surgically harvested. After making such a diagnosis, the pathologist also performs “tissue diagnosis of surgical specimens” and reports the results to the physician.

Serious shortage of Pathologists
Pathologist makes important diagnoses for patients everyday that matter their lives in the future. Although they play important roles in the medical field, there is a chronic shortage in Japan and around the world.
In many cases, a single pathologist is responsible for all pathological diagnoses at the hospital.They must feel pressured in that situation.
How Medmain solve the issue
Medmain Inc. is a startup that aims to solve the burdens in the medical industry with the power of technology. In collaboration with some medical institutions in Japan and overseas, we develop and operate PidPort, a system that supports pathological image analysis using deep learning.
PidPort is a revolutionary software that uses deep learning to analyze imaged cells and tissues to determine lesions with high accuracy and speed. (We are planning to officially release the product soon.)
Medmain also provides digital imaging services.The mainstream of specimens used in pathological diagnosis have been glass specimen, although now it is starting to switch to diagnosis with using digitized image.
We own scanners used for digitizing those glass prepared specimen at our “Imaging Center”. It provides services such as scanning and converting prepalates into high-resolution digital data at high speed and with care. We hope this will help medical institutions to solve problems such as deterioration of prepalate specimens and the shortage of storage space to stock them.
In the medical field,there still might be many issues that can be solved by technology.
With the power of technology, Medmain hopes to reduce the burden on patients around the world who are waiting for diagnostic results with uneasy. And we hope to create an environment where pathologists and medical professionals, who are burdened by the serious shortage of manpower, can work more comfortably.
What does the company name “Medmain” mean?
Medmain is a team that combines medical affiliates and IT professionals.Our company name “Medmain” is a cross between “Med,” which stands for “medical”, and “Domain,” which is an IT term, representing the fusion of medicine and IT.

There are still some boundaries in the world, such as the country of birth, the city to live in, and the economic strength of the country. Because of this, there are still many people who are not able to access the medical care that they need.
